Lyricist Joan Oviatt-Jobst and Daniel Carter collaborated on many musical projects including two stage musicals and several other songs and choral pieces from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. Joan is an award-winning playwright, author, producer, director, and actor whose works have won accolades and honors nationally and internationally. She wrote the lyric for this song based on 1 John 4:18 in the late 1970s and Daniel set it to music after which it was published in The New Era magazine in June 1983. Daniel and Joan were in their late 20s at the time.

Dr. Jay Dougherty found their collaboration and arranged it for SATB Choir and Piano. Dr. Dougherty is the Chair of the Music Department at Marietta College in the Mid-Ohio Valley where he teaches all campus choral ensembles, a contemporary a cappella ensemble, the community Oratorio Chorus, choral methods, beginning conducting, and advanced choral conducting.
