John Leland’s (1754-1841) descriptive and powerful text captivated Joshua Leavitt (1794-1873) who composed a plaintive melody about the Savior’s pleading in our behalf on Judgement Day. This public domain Appalachian folk hymn tune titled PLEADING SAVIOR was first published in “Christians Lyre” in 1830 in the Sacred Harp tradition.
