Daniel Carter composed seven different hymn melodies for Lee Tom Perry’s beautiful text when he was 28 years old, all of which were rejected for inclusion into the 1985 LDS Hymns. Even though he had a feeling that the last melody would be included, it was rejected. After deep disappointment, Daniel received a call from the chairman of the General Music Committee who told him of the struggles of whether or not to include the hymn, but that, finally, it would be included after all. The reasons for not including it at the time were that it was too “progressive, dissonant, and has a melody that included an awkward jump in it for congregations.” Nearly four decades later, this hymn continues to be published in many other languages and is performed and arranged by countless people.
Dr. Robin Hancock and his wife, Cheri share an enduring friendship of over 40 years with Daniel as alumni of BYU. When Dr. Hancock sent Daniel his arrangement, Daniel wrote back to his friend and told him that it was by far the best choral arrangement he had encountered and was honored by it. Daniel showed the arrangement to publisher, Melvyn Windham, who loved the arrangement enough to publish it.
Suitable for Christ-centered gatherings, communion, sacrament, atonement, and Easter-themed meetings and worship. Intermediate skill level which facilitates ease of learning and performing.
